sarahkdesigns @ etsy.com

Want to see some of my artwork? Then come visit my Etsy shop!

Etsy is the ecommerce site to “buy and sell all things handmade.” Or, as I like to put it: ebay for arts & crafts (without all the fee issues). I like the site. I appreciate that Etsy is a place online that I can ply my craft without having to build my own site from scratch (not unlike blogspot). I would rather spend my time creating art than mastering html, php, and how to set up my own paypal checkout...

I have 2 stores on etsy:

sarahkdesigns
Which is currently housing my prints & watercolors.

And

sarahknight
Which is where I sell greeting cards.

Artist's Statement

I am not what I am not; I am what I am, and I do what pleases me in the moment that I happen to be doing it. I am an artist.

Words are words, I work in images, pictures, compositions. I draw. I render. I paint. I photograph... I imagine.

I meander, I wander, and I always find things; tangible and intangible. I’m messy, unkempt, chaotic, unplanned, spur of the moment... but I’m not committed to some plan of constant or regular spontaneity. If it happens, then it happens; if not, then not.

I like the notion of endless possibilities, and sunsets, and the color violet. End results are infinite; the ability to form them should hold true to that ideal. I like the idea of infinite ideas or infinite directions. I cherish change. I enjoy evolving. I want to do different things in different ways at different points in time for different intervals of time... and I’m human, so I want to be happy with what I’m doing.

Sometimes I’m literal, and sometimes I’m figurative. I hope you experience something when you view my artwork, and I hope that something is self determined.

Sometimes I title pieces, and sometimes I don’t. Some things need a name, some don’t. Because, ultimately, words are words, but I work in images — pictures — compositions. Sometimes words are a necessary tool, and sometimes not.

So, be open, and look around.

Hello my name is Sarah

I am Sarah Knight. I've had a lifelong interest in art. I started drawing at the age of two and haven't stopped since. And my mother has boxes upon boxes full of my drawings as evidence... As a child I drew a lot of people (and always with hands with fingers), and teddy bears, and houses. I distinctly recall an incident in first grade where I was not content to simply use crayons to make flat color on coloring pages — I wanted the tree trunk to look like a birch...

As a child I was a brownie, and, yes, I sold cookies door to door. I did my first batiking as a brownie. I was also a member of 4-H, where I learned a lot about origami and paper making, and further refined my drawing.

My mother taught me how to sew and make bobbin lace. Although I must admit, that embroidery never really took, since I wanted to sew with what color and in whatever direction I desired. As a teenager I became interested in ceramics, an interest that I would carry through every semester of college. I know it’s anathema to certain folks, but I was always fascinated by the potential surprise of the way glazes would come out in random combinations and applications... and that I love low fire glazes and don’t at all have any use for the philosophy of a limited color palette of a select few chemicals that render color at high temperatures.

I occasionally like to dabble in jewelry making, mostly with earrings. I like finding things and taking them apart to make other things.

I’ve always had an affinity for photography, albeit as an adult. I have been known to, on occasion, to stop on the side of the road on my way home from work just to take pictures. Or to plan to go out driving or walking around just to get in a few shots.

Nevertheless, drawing has always been my passion. After graduating from high school, I enrolled at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA. Philly was an interesting time and a great experience, and I made the Dean’s List. Unfortunately, out of state tuition is quite costly. Thus, I transferred to the School of Art & Design of the University of Michigan. There my concentration was scientific illustration; although I took a lot of ceramics... and made the Dean’s List, repeatedly. I graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
